While visiting France, the PCs got to meet Emile Roger, Karl Benz and his wife, Bertha Benz. Adoline wanted a vehicle capable of making the trip from Oxford to London (57 miles/92 km). This gave Bertha the idea to take the Benz vehicle on a long trip. On August 5, 1888, Bertha and her two sons set out on a 104 km journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her mother. They returned via a 90 km route. This was the first long distance journey in an automobile.
